Very few dream jobs are actually dream jobs. None of them provide "meaning". All these positions are replaceable. To your wife you are irreplaceable. That is meaning.

@ There are many ways to find meaning in your life but I would warn everybody from mistaking a career for one. I used to be a scientist and even in science (as Sabine can tell you) a position can be filled with more than one person. We don't become irreplaceable by education. It's just a more complicated job than most (but probably not as complicated as e.g. surgeon), but it's still just a job.

A masters/PhD in physics teaches you how to be a physicist. It DOES NOT open you the door into academia. If you don't understand that, then stay away from academia, which is about TEACHING.
1
@ No offense, but you don't sound like a physicist. You sound like a guy who wants attention by talking bullshit. ;-)

Sister... academic positions are TEACHING positions. YOU, the teacher, MOVE to where the schools and students are. This is just as true for a Kindergarten teacher as it is for a physics professor. OK? Are we cool with that?
1
You are correct. She is all about memes and nothing she does here is about science. ;-)
1
Are you implying she is psychotic? ;-)

I have seen landscape architects create oases in deserts. You are obviously not one of them. Your problem has nothing to do with what they taught you. It's entirely linked to the kind of person you are. A negative Dude without any inspiration.

Why is it heart breaking? Many kids want to become astronaut. Very few eventually do and they do it at great personal cost. Same with prima ballerina and a host of other jobs. Not having one of these positions in your life is not heart breaking. Not have any people in your life who love you and who are being loved by you. That is heart breaking.

Let me tell you a story, Dude. My first physics classroom in university had 150 students attending. Some of the first semesters next to me were talking about how to become a professor. I turned around and said this: "Do you see the professor? The guy will have been teaching this class roughly 30 times by the time he retires. Among all these students taking this class ONE will eventually replace him. So that's one in several thousand.". If you elect physics as your major and you can't even do a simple calculation like this in your mind, then you have chosen the wrong major. You would do far better in the liberal arts department. ;-)

Just because you aren't in academia doesn't mean you have to talk nonsense about basic physics on the internet. That's just another false dichotomy fallacy. ;-)
1
What did you need to hear? That the chances of becoming a TEACHER in academia are low? You should have noticed that on your first day in a lecture hall with 100 students and 1 professor. If you haven't, then you aren't smart enough to be in academia. ;-)

You didn't notice before that she comes from a position of spite? :-)

@ I can only think of three reasons why you would be in support of Sabine: 1) School didn't work for you. You actually have my support on that level. I think we are doing a horrible hack job teaching children that is messing up a lot of minds. We need to change that. 2) You are lonely and want attention. In that case I will just give it to you. 3) You are an SEO bot to increase Sabine's ranking in the YouTube algorithm. Let me know which option you want to take and then we can talk accordingly. ;-)
