The universe is, by definition, the one and only collection of all systems. Energy is only conserved in systems that have time translation symmetry. Spacetime does not have this property at large scales. The only reason why energy conservation is so appealing to you is because we drilled it into you in high school without explaining the details properly. It was a lie of mercy to a teenager who wasn't ready for the truth, if you like. If you want to understand "the real universe", then you have to learn the details and you have to let go of the "energy conservation" holy cow. The world simply doesn't work like that IN GENERAL, even if it does work like that when you have to pay your electricity bill.

Energy is the ability of a system to perform work on another system. You were supposed to learn these thirteen words in high school. Why didn't you? ;-)
