Because the definition of force does not include gravity. Newton called ONE effect that causes relative motion right, he didn't call ALL such effects correctly. The problem for most people is that we don't teach it like that in school. Instead we are pretending that Newtonian gravity is the correct solution and that everything is fine. They already knew better at the time of Newton, we just didn't have the observational data to go beyond what we knew could not have been entirely correct. Now we do and it would be better to teach forces as one thing and Newtonian gravity as a completely different one right from the beginning.

Einstein had a lot of false ideas about a lot of things. Physics was never about numerical laws. Taking Einstein literally about these things leads to a complete misunderstanding of physics.

Your cell phone can measure acceleration just fine without reference to any other part of the universe. You need to pay attention to your cell phone, even if you haven't been paying attention to high school physics. ;-)

That's coordinate acceleration. Physical acceleration is absolute because it can be measured in a single coordinate system (no other system is needed). Your cell phone can do it for you.

All time is the measurement of the observer. Time is simply that which the clocks show. The assumption in Newtonian mechanics was that all clocks are equal and that they are showing the same time no matter where they are and what their physical history was. That turns out to be false. The times that clocks show depend on their locations and relative motion histories. Nothing really exciting here.

@ There is no such thing as "time" without clocks. That's just one of those nonsensical philosophical ideas that just don't want to disappear, no matter how many times it is being pointed out that science does not speak of unmeasurable things. Only religions and binge drinking people who are close to passing out are talking about such nonsense. ;-)

Time is not really a dimension. Time is that which the clocks show. You can define a time unit any which way you like, depending on what's convenient. In SI we use the second because it's a convenient unit for human time measurement. Theoretical physicists might end up with something closer to the period of the ground state to ionization energy transition of hydrogen (10^-16seconds or so).

We can. Objects in free fall are simply not accelerating (but they are still experiencing tidal forces). This is where actual physical coordinates and naive mathematical coordinate systems differ. The problem is solely with the naive mathematical coordinates. The world just ain't so.

@edwardmacnab354 If you are still stuck on Michaelson-Morley, then you were definitely not paying any attention. One can derive all of special relativity algebraically with a few dozen lines of high school level math using nothing but Galileo's correct understanding of the relativity principle. Electrodynamics never even gets close to being involved in that. ;-)
