  1. Mars is perfectly habitable... for trans-humans. So is most of the remainder of the universe. No need to terraform the heck out of every place. Just adapt. People are so short sighted about these issues. It's unbelievable.

  2. Because living in Antarctica (or even Greenland) is a major hassle and logistics problem. The most isolated places that humans have been populating are usually still supplying ample food resources (e.g. from the ocean). Even living in Alaska has to be subsidized with thousands of dollars per citizen to provide medical support and transportation. It's much easier to live in a friendly place like Michigan.

  3. We already are. There are plenty of "desert greening" projects underway. Large cities are supporting far more people than the land could if left in its natural state. We have been "terraforming" Earth for a long time. Our 10 million megacities would have been nearly unimaginable 5000 years ago, when the largest cities (including their outskirts) were probably on the order of 50,000-100,000 people.

  4. A magnetic field could be engineered. But what for? The problem isn't Mars. The problem is us. It's far easier and cheaper to change ourselves than to change Mars.
