@UsefulCharts Neither was there a garden with a talking snake or a flood or a guy inside a whale. What there was, though, was the misery described in Psalms. That is where history really is showing through, in the obvious PTSD of the psalmists. These are people under enormous distress, which historically will result in a crescendo of death and destruction all the way to the year 70AD and then again 135AD. And those in the Roman empire who adopted the apocalyptic religion of a new prophet were even more desperate and wished for nothing more than death because life was hell on Earth for a Roman slave of the 1st and 2nd and 3d centuries. So, yeah, what we Christians call "the good book" is really a horror story in disguise, we are just not taught to read it for what it is.

Why is the question who edited the bible into its final form controversial?

Scholars don't believe that these texts are "inspired". They know that they were written for a purpose which was often political. Try to read the Torah as a political manifest similar to the The Palestinian National Charter and you will immediately understand much more of what is really going on in the Abrahamic religions: a struggle for independence by Jews and, seven centuries later, a desperate wish for release from their earthly misery by Roman slaves. So, no, the books don't talk as much about legends or myths or magical tales as they talk about the real suffering of millions of people over almost an entire millennium. Can you find god in there? No, of course not. You will find plenty of misery, hate and PTSD, instead.

Nothing. The Jews were never in Egypt. That's just one of the stories in the bible that is made from whole cloth.

In other words, you are drawing your own history with your colorful crayons, kid. OK.

So you don't know what sin is? Did you never read the bible or Torah? God defines it for you very early on in the book.
