Yes, Chris, there are a lot of better looking internet trolls than you. ;-)

@kellyscarolinagarden I think that's the most important thing, anyway. I see cars as utility products, so if they perform their function without causing stress for the owner because of frequent repairs, then it's all good.

Well, this one was close to destruction. Only an idiot will repair these things.

@chriscraven33 Just what I said. :-)

@erik_dk842 That's because I change my mirror's oil regularly. ;-)

Why are you pouring good money into a bad car? It's time to get a new one.

@kellyscarolinagarden I get it. My parents had a 27 year old Honda that drove just fine and that they didn't want to give away, either. That's emotional attachment. Is it financially rational to fix these things up? No. A car is designed to wear out and it wears out. Sometimes we get lucky and the use pattern leads to longer than average life, but in general it makes more sense to invest in a new car at some point. Putting $400 in a repair may make sense, but I would definitely draw a line at $4000. That's 10% of a new model and was probably more than what the car was worth at the time.

@kellyscarolinagarden Good point. If you can tie the time over until you can buy an EV that suits you, then the investment may make sense. With the current cost of used cars the strategy of replacing a very old used car with a newer used one would not work well, either, in this case. Don't know what the rates for car loans are these days, but if you have to do financing, then there are probably no really good options right now either way.

@erik_dk842 I don't own an EV, yet. I have an aging car that will replacement at some point, unless I go first, of course. I am already kind of worthless in the used human market, myself, and while cars can be repaired almost indefinitely, humans can not. ;-)

I would replace that shit, too... with an EV. :-)

@RealMTBAddict Good trolling. Short and sweet. Let me feed you. :-)

@erik_dk842 12V batteries have become really expensive, haven't they? ;-)
1
And that's exactly what you do. You pour oil in until it stops. And then you scrap it.

These cars are designed to make money for Toyota. The longer you keep them, the more money Toyota makes on you. Alternatively you can give that money to an independent repair shop... but what for? You are far better off putting it in a new car. This is brand independent, of course.
1
@RealMTBAddict Yes, it is, but it is a huge waste of money that one can't avoid in the long run. There was a time in the past when beaters were so cheap that one could make an argument that they were good value, but I don't think that applies right now.
