  9. Sorry to hear that. Your experience matches that of my relatives. They caught a pre-alpha in 2020 and some of them described it as the worst experience of their lives. They got omicron a couple of months ago and everybody was really sick for about two weeks. It's nothing like a flu or a mild cold. One of them has long COVID symptoms in addition. He went from being healthy and fit (he did a 100km bike ride just shortly before he got infected) to having constant fatigue and pain. I wish you the best!

  10.  @mightyblues7  I know a young medical doctor who had a case of a "mild" delta infection, but he caught it at work. I would assume that he took all the antivirals as soon as he tested positive, which would have been hours, if not days sooner than the average person. The young (in their early 20s) family members in my family complained about it being a horrible experience. The only really "mild" case for us was a less than one year old infant who had slight fewer for a couple of days. Yeah, sorry... the myth that "it's just a flu" doesn't want to go away, no matter how many people know better.

  18.  @susanperry9311  Eight of my relatives had omicron a couple months ago (that was the second time they got COVID-19). They reported loss of taste, cough, difficulty breathing, fever and malaise that lasted up to two weeks. All of them tested positive for COVID-19. Thanks for the reassurances, but I got all the data I need. The general assessment in my family is that COVID-19 is far worse than the flu. The fist time they got it some family members said it was the worst they had ever felt in their lives. One couple had it three times now and one person has long COVID-19 on top. Thankfully we didn't have any fatalities, yet, but I won't count on it for the future.

  19.  @susanperry9311  First time they had it was wildtype or pre-alpha or whatever you want to call it. The second time was already in the omicron wave, but you are correct, it may have been delta. The couple that had it three times had a wildtype and most likely a delta... so that kind of makes the third infection likely an omicron variant. Be that as it may, none of them ever said that it was "light". I only know one person with a light infection: a doctor who got it at work. The other people I know never had it... but then, they are fully vaccinated and boosted. The "sick" group in my family consists of antivaxxers and the couple that had it three times only had access to sinovac. They may as well have been given saline, IMHO. The other obvious division in my family is socioeconomics: everybody who got COVID was among the less affluent family members without higher education. Those who didn't were more affluent and better educated, i.e. they took far better care of themselves with masking and social distancing.

  20.  @susanperry9311  In my family bad choices all boil down to poor education. Don't get me wrong, these are awfully nice people. I like them. They are not malicious or anything. They simply don't have a working bullshit meter and they have been told all kinds of nonsense about vaccination on the internet. Their go-to phrase about COVID was "We are in god's hands now.", to which the remainder of the family responded with "And god was giving with both hands!" when they got infected for the second time. The simple fact is that one can't talk sense into people who don't have it already.

  27.  @rememberallah5201  Half my family had it more than twice, already. The other half is fully vaccinated and boosted (with Moderna and or Pfizer) and didn't have it even once. Or, if we did, then none of us noticed. To answer your question... if you are worried about your health, annual vaccination might be your best option. Just like with the flu vaccines it may not be 100% effective for everybody, but they should keep you significantly safer than raw exposure.

  28.  @rememberallah5201  It doesn't look like the antibody counts lie. After infection and vaccination the body produces the most antibodies and they decline slowly over the following months. Antibodies are our first and fastest defense. They neutralize the spike protein that the virus needs and they cause the initial immune reaction. The T-cell responses are much slower in comparison and they are not as effective in preventing the virus from multiplying quickly. People with multiple infections and people who had VOCID after vaccination are living proof that there is no case to be made for lasting immunity. It is unfortunately also true that not everybody has the same immune repertoire and we don't all make the same antibodies and equal numbers of them. There is a wide range of immune responses and that is one of the reasons why some people get more sick than others. Since the virus mutates even those who didn't get (very) sick the first time don't have automatic protection for the future. This is, whether we like it or not, a biological roulette. Some win, some lose, and nature doesn't care because evolution only works if there is a stochastic component. So, yeah, this makes life risky and the best you can do is to minimize your risk. It will, unfortunately, never be zero.

We told you to take two shots a month apart and one shot with a lower concentration of the vaccines at least six months later. I don't even know how I could get another shot even if I wanted one. My doctor would certainly not give me one and neither would my pharmacy. So what, exactly, are you talking about? I am not aware of a firm date for the availability of the next vaccines, but I would not expect them before Q3, which means it would take at least until Q1 2023 for widespread uptake. That's closer to a year and a half since the last booster. So where does your 3-4 month bullshit come from, exactly? I had at least 50 vaccines in my life, probably more. My immune system is fine. I had flu shots every year for the past 15 years and those were the only years of my life that I didn't catch the flu. Look, your fears may be real, but they are not rational.

  32. The essential difference between "natural immunity" (which doesn't exist) and the vaccinated is that the vaccinated don't become vectors quite as often. I think we made a huge PR mistake by not educating the public that vaccinations' main purpose is to disrupt the spread of the disease. It's not just about keeping infected individuals out of the ICU. As a consequence we did not effectively disrupt COVID-19.

  73. It's actually worse than that. On average the US lost approx. 1000 people a day since the second quarter of 2020. The number for the entire world is on the order of over 6000. There is no guarantee that we won't stay at that level after this wave is over.

If you estimate conservatively that only half of those who are infected get tested and\or test positive and those who have the disease remain infectious vectors for five days, then multiplying the number of positive cases with ten gives you a rough idea about how many infectious people you have out there. I find that during the omicron peak typically one half to several percent of the population might have been infectious, i.e. if you went to the grocery store, the likelihood of coming in contact with a vector was very high. We could have prevented the omicron peak only with nearly 100% vaccinated and boosted populations and effective social distancing, neither of which Western countries are willing to do.
