  1. The US rust belt could be revitalized just as nicely as the German Ruhrgebiet has been. All it takes is political will. That, unfortunately, is lacking.

  4. Location is always expensive. Only the hellholes are cheap. 30 minutes North of the city you can have as much nature as you want. What else do you want? A tree growing in your living room?

  10. A lot of small and medium communities have those problems, especially for youth. Adults can deal with the "there is no there there" atmosphere, but to teens it's hell on Earth. They need mental stimulation, which does not exist. I grew up in a small town like that. The boredom was only made bearable because we had good high school teachers who organized weekly intellectual activities for us. Well, in hindsight... maybe they didn't just do it for us. I have a strong suspicion that they did it for themselves, as well.

  13. There is a difference between cool and useful. If you ever had to live in a one street village you know what that problem with it is: distance. Distances on a line scale with O(n), while for a two dimensional city they scale with O(sqrt(n)). In the real world that difference is enormous.
