@mewfortwo I didn't mean to make a joke, actually. I apologize for the smiley. I automatically put that at the end of almost all of my posts. It has become a bad habit, but I agree that it is not appropriate in this case. It's simply a fact that people on minimum wage who don't have a support network (like parents or a partner who has a better paying job) have to work two jobs in one way or another. Realistically I can't see how else one can survive in the US. I also agree with you that working oneself to an early grave should be a thing of the past, but it is not. There would be ways for society to solve this even while maintaining minimum wage work, which is important for some sections of the economy... e.g. by providing affordable housing, healthcare and education to give people at least a fighting chance at upward mobility. At least that is what I think... but you can be sure that nobody takes me seriously around here. I am a humanist, after all, which is worse than being a communist.

@ChristopherMHeaps With me? Nothing. I am retired and on social security. I don't need a job for now and let's hope that won't change because I can't really do one any longer. With America? Everything. But we are going to make it great, again, right? How about some steep tariffs to drive inflation even higher? Then folks on minimum wage will have to work three jobs. ;-)

@Successville-Cityofthefuture Unless you are pretty, a successful athlete or artistically highly gifted, the only ways you can earn six figures without degrees (or at least licenses like a realtor's license) is either by working yourself to death in physically demanding jobs (like certain areas of the construction business) or by cheating people. You don't sound like the kind that works hard. ;-)

The Roman Empire didn't fall until the 15th century. There was noting the Romans could do, anyway. They succumbed to environmental changes that was driving the Migration Period and a total reorganization of Europe afterwards. None of that plays any role in the political realities of the US. The US is suffering from old people syndrome, not the influx of young populations.

@donthasselthehoff5753 Why are you giving us only examples of countries we are NOT occupying? Have you been drinking heavily? In reality we have more of a presence in Antarctica and on Mars than in many of those places. Palestine, by the way, is not even a place. It's a mythology invented for political purposes to shield terrorists from moral accountability. :-)

@juanmccoy3066 This has nothing to do with government spending. We are simply short on cheap labor. The country is aging, many people retired early during COVID. The economy is excellent, of course, you are simply not getting anything out of it because of inflation. That is a genuine gunning-for-your-own-legs problem, of course. Just wait what will happen after Trump deports millions of cheap laborers. You ain't seen nothing, yet. There will be empty shelves and double or triple the prices in the grocery stores. ;-)

@TrollinOn22s They didn't fool you. If you raise wages (minimum or not), then prices will go up. That's inevitable. Businesses can't eat the additional cost without handing it down to the consumer. It's just not the only thing that raises cost.

I don't know. On average the US is still pretty cool... if you are educated. I am not sure it's that great a place to be if you are not. But then... neither is anywhere else in the world.
