  1. There is nothing wrong with drum machines. They are DIFFERENT, not worse. And the problem as you said is... there are very few really good drummers. I would take a well programmed drum track over a poor drummer any day.

  2. The problem with movies is the audience. It was always the audience. Look at the sales of e.g. French art film. It's pitiful, even compared to block busters at the time.
