Taiwan has three major industries: semiconductors, the exploitation of mainland Chinese workers and bubble tea. :-)

There is a difference between wanting and achieving. The same happened to Japan half a century ago. It's not that they didn't want it. They were simply not able to do it, despite best efforts.
7
@LizziesLukas The most important companies are the ones that are providing you with fresh water, food, sanitation and housing. Everything beyond that is luxury.

Very little will change because the climate is driven by China's actions (and it is currently going renewable because it can't afford burning coal any longer) and most corporations are driven by public perception and bottom line, not by environmental law.

What IP was stolen? ;-)
2
But will it replace your broken keyboard? ;-)

New York to Boston is a little over 200 miles... the perfect distance for train travel, still slightly too short for flying. Now, try 600 or 800 miles on that same train. You will be kicking yourself for that bad choice.
2
@@rosenryan7 It's worse than that. China can't even make decent "low end" chips like analog components. If they could, they would still have to dump them in low end markets basically near cost because nobody in the West would buy them. Japan found that out the hard way, even though they have decent product in that segment of the market.
2
@vibaj16 That's why nature has invented love. ;-)
2
China has millions of smart people, all of whom are being held back by incompetent political leadership. You have to remember that in China every head that sticks out of the crowd is being chopped down by default. ;-)
2
In a dictatorship it doesn't matter if people like the dictator or not.
2
Yes, it will be even more chaotic. ;-)
2
Yes, just not in such quantities and probably at a significantly higher cost.
1
@Cooe. Intel can't sell chips "at cost". Intel has to make chips at a profit. Dude... Intel and TMSC revenue are similar, but Intel sells considerably more expensive products, hence it doesn't need as much fab capacity. By EUV lithography machine count TSMC seems to be leading by a factor of two.
1
Yeah... but who wants to see reality for what it is when they can have a pipe, excuse me, in this case, a rail dream?
1
Ukraine is what a war looks like. This is simply economics.
1
About what? It was a fair and square election. This time Trump won for real and in a democracy you get the politicians you vote for.
1
The US doesn't rely on China, you simply didn't pay attention. ;-)
1
@DC-ek6ib OMG, kid, now you are just feeling sorry for yourself. ;-)
1
He said it clearly: passenger rail was unprofitable before we had cars and planes and it can't compete with either for short or long routes. Trains are basically not a good option for the US. No amount of magical thinking can fix that.
1
China has a large scale semiconductor industry. It's just not competitive. You can easily understand why once you try reading their data sheets. They can't even document their own products correctly. With a Chinese chip it's always a guessing game.
1
That is the right of every sovereign country. Don't feel sorry for yourself now.
1
China has the typical face saving problem of all Asian people. It's amplified by the mistrust in their government, the collapse of their workforce and their really poor education system that values regurgitation over independent thinking. China is a paper tiger. ;-)
1
@DC-ek6ib There will always be cheap products, they may just not be coming from China. Mexico, Southeast Asia, South America and Africa have vast workforces, too. ;-)
1
@doverpicard6090 The high tech electronics market belongs to the US, one way or another. You aren't going to buy CPUs and GPUs from China anytime soon. Neither will you be using Chinese FPGAs or analog chips. The Chinese can't build any of the real stuff.
1
He has aspirations to become one, though. ;-)
1
China has zero interest in that. All their advanced chips come from Taiwan. Their electronics industry would be taking the biggest hit of all.
1
Dude... nuclear weapons are technology of the 1940s and ICBMs are technology of the 1950s. You need to get a grip. ;-)
1
If you are Russian then you better be aware that Trump has a tendency to ruin his "friends". :-)
1
@Doubleranged1 Clean water is mostly a matter of having chlorine, kid. Why are you telling me that you didn't pay attention in high school? ;-)
1
@larryc1616 Nah. The US and Europe will simply replace it with new fabs in a few years. Dude, nothing is irreplaceable. ;-)
1
@thefance4708 I can live for a few days without national security. I can't live very long without clean water. Why are you telling me that you didn't pay attention in kindergarten? ;-)
1
@thefance4708 I don't know about your education, kid. As for me... I have a PhD in physics? Are you a PhD, too? ;-)
1
@larryc1616 Why are you telling me that you didn't read the technology news? ;-)
1
@quoctrungnguyen4553 Not really, kid. :-)
1
@OsuKanade No, you don't, so why are you making a fool of yourself right now? I made a joke. You clearly didn't even get that. :-)
1
@jennychuang808 You are correct. I know nothing... except maybe that I have been using semiconductors in my electronics designs for 50 years. ;-)
1
@jennychuang808 Now you are just projecting, kid. ;-)
1
@jennychuang808 Did I say anything else? Do you have a reading comprehension problem? ;-)
1
@jennychuang808 You need to pay attention, kid. :-)
1
Poor China. They are making me cry for them. Huge crocodile tears pooling on the floor. It's filling up my entire living room! Now the windows are bursting. ROFL.
1
He doesn't act like either, though. So far Xi has destroyed at least ten to twenty years of progress in China and he won't stop until he has it back in the stone age. ;-)
1
Nah. China is like Japan. It's petering out before it even got started.
1
@rodolphendessabeka8721 Yeah, I keep hearing about that... what I don't see is any Huawei tech anywhere. Sounds a bit like a fairytale, doesn't it? ;-)
1
@rodolphendessabeka8721 South Africa is a tiny nation without any consequences for the world. The reason why they are aligned with both China and Russia is simply corruption. The Chinese and the Russians bought their politicians. ;-)
1
@rodolphendessabeka8721 I have a PhD in physics. Is that serious enough for you to feel sorry for yourself now? ;-)
1
China is busy feeling sorry for itself, though. ;-)
1
Said Chinese people I have met in China. ;-)
1
Said Chinese people I have met in China. ;-)
1
Yes, they make a lot of cheap junk. Especially toasters. ;-)
