  1. @califdad4 I didn't say that one has to change the framing. That's not necessary. The problem is the OSB sheathing. Replace it with cement board and nothing will burn. Seriously. I tried it myself a dozen years ago. One can literally direct a blowtorch at cement board and the wood behind it will not burn. Actually, the other side of cement board stays cool to the touch for a minute or so while the torched side glows red hot. It's like a cheap version of space shuttle tiles. It used to be slightly more expensive than OSB but now it's actually cheaper, I believe, because wood prices have increased so much. The argument that something that is highly flammable hasn't burned in 60 years is ridiculous, by the way. Wood doesn't get less flammable with age. Many SoCal homes have a pool, by the way. That's plenty of water for an external sprinkler system. You can find videos on the internet showing just how effective it is to install a low flow sprinkler on the roof. It won't put out a fire, but it will put out embers that can start a fire. Solar is also your friend. Guess what solar panels don't do? They don't burn. They are made of glass, silicon and aluminum.

  4. So when are we going to talk about building codes, then? Not now. Not when people are rebuilding in stick and frame with OSB sheathing, either. Next time when brand new stick and frame with OSB sheathing neighborhoods are going up in flames, again? Oh, wait... that's not going to be the right time to talk about the politics of building codes, either, right? Cue the definition of insanity.

  5. @califdad4 They have fire crews from all across the Midwest and Canada working on it, don't they? No amount of firefighting equipment is going to put out thousands of stick and frame tinderboxes. The SANE person simply does NOT build a tinderbox. The SANE person builds a home using fire retardant materials that simply can't burn. Don't be an INSANE person. Are we cool? ;-)

  6. @ They could have done it after the fire in Oakland or was it Berkeley? I don't remember any more. They could have done it after the Paradise fire. They could have done it after Maui. I can tell you exactly what will happen: absolutely nothing. This country is completely insane.

  10. The governor is not responsible for local building and fire codes. The counties are. Guess which county supervisors will require people to replace their OSB sheathing against cement board and their asphalt roof shingles against clay or cement shingles? Not the ones that want to be re-elected. :-)

  17. Dude. Prayers do not work. Do you know what would work? Building codes that require the use of flame retardant materials for roofs and walls. But guess what? We can't have that because of FREEEEEEEEEDOM! Yes, you are free to let your house burn. But please, do us a favor and stop complaining about the consequences of your own stupidity.
