That's simply supply and demand and "in the West" as you said it, which in the US means California and especially California oceanfront properties, supply is very limited. There is only so much buildable shoreline and even behind that there is only so much land that people want to live on. And if you want to talk about Australia, I have been there as a tourist, there is also only so much land that people have the hots for. As much as I liked the outback and Alice Springs for a day or two, I would still prefer a pad in Sydney, Mate! And that also means that if I could afford one, I would buy it at any price that is within my reach (don't worry, it's not within my reach). I have no idea what any of that has to do with child labor in Bangladesh and neither do you. Are we cool? Now, with regards to the US, the problem is not the cost of housing. The problem is that the value of manual labor is constantly declining. There is nothing anybody can do about that. Mechanization is marching along at exponential speed. What took ten people in the past can today be done by one or... none. So, better tell your kids to pay very good attention in school, because if they don't they better have the looks of Claudia or they better jump like Jordan or it's game over!

@andrewbagshaw3095 Yeah, the shortness of land in the American West is certainly not a negative aspect of globalization. Neither are nearly 100% employment and full stores. :-) As for automation... my first student job was in the electronics lab of a small company with a couple hundred employees. They asked me to think about automating a manual test procedure. After a couple of days I had cobbled together a circuit that would have eliminated the job of of at least one, possibly two of their employees. Automation is much easier than you think. It's also much more devastating than most people think. So make sure your kids are smarter than you. They will have to be. :-)

@andrewbagshaw3095 I didn't care at any age. My parents were poor but there was always enough food on the table. I like science, so my parents got me science books. I studied and was happy. I became a physicist and did some cool shit in my life. It didn't make me rich. I still rent. I don't own a house, not here and certainly not on the Pacific oceanfront. OK? Why in the world should I worry about that? If I had been desperate to be rich, then I would not have done science but finance or something. I didn't vote in like thirty years. Not because I don't care but because I was usually working in countries around the globe were I didn't have the local voting rights. I am a global citizen. That's far more interesting than to vote some local idiot for mayor or some federal idiot for president. Before that, while I still had the voting rights, I was living in voting districts where my vote made no difference. In one the social democratic party won all the time, in the other it was always the conservative party. Whether I added my voice for or against the surefire winner didn't matter. That is how democracy works. Even perfect democracy works that way. So, kid, what is wrong with you? If you want to change the world, then get off your ass and do something USEFUL. Complaining on the internet how horrible the world is to you does only one thing: it makes you look like a complete idiot. :-)

The sky is falling, and the end is near! :-) What I was describing is that I didn't have voting rights for the past 30 years because I was never citizen of the country that I was living in.
