  1. They probably had fifteen minutes to half an hour of advance notice. Cruise missiles don't fly very fast (these ones are subsonic, so the "travel times" are similar to those of passenger jets). The real embarrassment is that they didn't clear the building and got everybody into the bunker. They were simply completely full of themselves. ;-)

  11.  @grievetan  The USSR didn't win. The Americans ended the war by using nuclear weapons against the Japanese. Russia never recovered economically and demographically from the double genocides of Hitler and Stalin. While the US has seen a steady influx of highly skilled people for over a century, Russia is experiencing a steady brain drain since the fall of the iron curtain. There is no metric on which Russia wins... maybe with exception of alcoholism and political stupidity.

  14. Russia had nothing to offer in 1945, either. The living conditions in Germany improved exponentially after the end of the war and by the mid 1950s it was more prosperous than before the war. Economic development behind the iron curtain was far slower. In West Germany you could easily buy a dozen cars a day if you had the money, in the German Democratic Republic you could buy one model... if you were willing to wait for 20 years. ;-)
