Actually, the Soviet leaders were ruthless but rational. They were acting from a position of national strength because even back then nobody was disputing the incredible sacrifice that Russia had given to the effort of defeating Nazi Germany. Whatever fear and loathing there may have been between the West and the USSR, there was a common root of respect at that level. Putin's generation can not rely on that respect. He is a post-war baby, or what we call the babyboomers. If anything, the young generation of every culture, including his own young people, is loathing people of his age. He is a parasite in a country that desperately needs a real leader. Nobody will shed a tear when he is gone. That is why he lashes out. His will only be remembered for the harm he has done to Russia and others.

It is unlikely that even that would be a deterrent. Putin seems to plan on a Blitzkrieg and I am pretty sure that he will be successful with it. It's a simple reset to the depths of the cold war. It's Ukraine and after that it's global nuclear war. Unfortunately, if that is what Putin wants, then that is where we are headed. The only people who can stop him are the people he is surrounded by. If they want the same, the world's goose is cooked.
