  1. You would have been one phone call away from the men in white robes showing up. In his 1923 novel "Men like Gods" H.G. Wells describes a parallel Earth that is supposed to be 3,000 years more advanced. People live peacefully in fairly small villages and towns. Each of these has a communal internet terminal/video phone kind of device that every inhabitant can use to communicate with other towns. When Wells wrote the novel tv had long been demonstrated and by the time he died in 1946, it was basically an established technology. He was, of course, far more interested in the social aspects of such a Utopia than in the technological ones, but it shows that technology moves much faster than human imagination.
