@abraxis59 Thanks for replying. However, she did not allude to "relax laws" when it comes to "drunk driving or rape" nor anything else. That is your assumption of what she meant and you seem to be conflating that with her overall idea on the matter. Because I'm sure she would agree, "minor drug offenses targeting heavily at minorities has been just as terrible." And as she made no reference toward "which crimes" she thinks any country should be "relaxed on?" You are putting words in her mouth. While agreeing, that some crimes (like drug use) should be "relaxed."
And the comparison I was making about Japan, you helped underscore my point. We aren't talking about "knives," we are talking about "guns." And to quote you (which you then made her point valid): "So, just like us, there is a mix of strict and relaxed laws that help them govern their country for good and for ill." However, we have more folks in jail than any other country per capita--including Japan.
Bottom line, she pointed to no crimes, just that some crime should have more relaxed laws, which you seem to agree with. Yet, you claim her point to be "overly simplistic and misleading to the extreme." When all she did was express, some laws should be "relaxed" and less harsh, as it would reduce crime on a whole if the penalty for small things (like drug use), weren't so extreme.

@abraxis59 Again, you proved the point. You are equating her words "No qualification, no caveats and no nuance." with your own, "I do not agree that the "relaxed" attitude towards drunk driving or rape in the US has done us any good, and the strict and heavy punishments for minor drug offenses targeting heavily at minorities has been just as terrible."
Then, you contradicted this statement right after, "So, I fail to see how universally being more relaxed on crime as a whole would benefit anyone."
Would being more "relax" on drug use/users benefit anyone? Would being more relaxed on things like stealing, theft (pick any minor crime) benefit anyone? You are claiming her point is invalid, then proving it's valid and it's not "overly simplistic and misleading."
Do you think she's talking about "drunk driving?" "Rape?" "Stabbing someone with a knife?" VS providing an alternative to jail (e.g. counselling, outreach, educational means? aka "relax")?
Again, you went to all the worse crimes to say her point was "overly simplistic and misleading," yet, you can point to any number of "crimes" that makes her point valid, right? And in any country? That is my point.
And here is another contradiction: "In many cultures/countries where behavior is better, there is a sense of culture/community where stepping outside the norms of society will get you punished by society. So, there is less need for criminal punishment, because these societies police themselves to a noticeable extent."
Yet, "Also, your comment that crime statistic are better in other countries that handle things in a more relaxed way are better is also overly simplistic and misleading to the extreme." (which makes the former statement, "overly simplistic and misleading?")
