@toomanyaccounts This The Japanese leadership (like most foreigners still think today) back then looked at our media and thought we were just over-decadent, party-going idiots who would be a push-over in a fight, that our country could not handle the sacrifice to fight. When they asked Yamamoto what he thought since he actually spent time there, he said they were a sleeping giant and to underestimate them would be a grave error. Maxim guns, while at one time were cutting edge, are obsolete. The tech itself is old but the items built around them have shelf lives. 1883 auto isn't the same as 1983 auto or even 2018 autos.
