  2. Yes that is basically true. But due to massive overpower of Sovjets, Mannerheim was a wise man and surrendered in March 1940. And saved thousands of Finns and independense of Finland. In turn Stalin got larger buffer zone for Russia. Perfect deal for both, security and peace eventually. But then later 1941 Finland made its biggest mistake in history, siding Hitler, once again. The outcome was defeat. Once again Finland was lucky to have good peace conditions so to speak. Stalin treated Finland fairly and Finland maintained its sovereignty. Later YYA deal with Russia practically gave both security. Sadly that unique relationship ended in 1991 when Sovjet Union collapsed. Finland could have stayed neutral and be a balance in world politics but clueless and cowardly politicians, now lead by hyper russophofic Kokoomus party, ruined everything. For a hundred years. Finland has never understand geopolitics, to put it frankly.

  12. ​ @Jamicaman516 True. However, Sovjets did not quite manage invade Finland but both Winter War 1939-1940 and Continuity War 1941-1944 were lost eventually. In Lapland War 1944-1945 Finns fought Nazi Germany, alongside Sovjets, so you could say that Finland won that war.

I just mixed Alexander II and Nikolai I obviously. And indeed Nikolai II era was very bad for Finland because he was stupid enough to misunderstand Finland's nationalistic ambitions against Russia. At the time Finland did not want hostilities with anyone really, just its independence that realized much later 6.12.1917.
