The main misconception among Filipinos is that they mistakenly treat the EEZ as an extension of their land, wrongly considering it their territory and believing they own everything within it. These are all incorrect. The EEZ only grants economic rights to activities in the water; it does not confer ownership of the water itself, nor does it determine ownership of islands, shoals, or reefs within the EEZ. Filipinos often invoke UNCLOS, but many have never taken the time to read a single clause of it.
