  1. In Tibetan culture, the Dalai Lama cannot choose his successor, as the successor is believed to be his own reincarnation. Therefore, the task of finding the next Dalai Lama falls to other lamas. Historically, the chosen successor had to be recognized by the Chinese emperor, and more recently, by the Chinese central government. Consequently, Tibetans in India may name anyone they like as the next Dalai Lama; however, such a choice would not be legitimate since it would not be recognized by the Chinese central government.
