Americans are very smart, they calculate everything (although sometimes wrong), in Korean war, US thought China would not join the war, despite China told US via India that if US across 38 parallel line China would send army into Korea, US did not listen, then China sent PLA, in 3 months time, kick US army from China border back to 38 parallel line. US learned this lesson, so in Vietnam war, China warned US, if you across 17 parallel line, China would send PLA to support Vietnam, this time US listened, never crossed it
