How the virus jump from animal to human is hot research topic for now, but once it is on human, virus by nature will make mutations, not on purpose, just due the nature of viral replicase randomly makes mistakes during viral replication process, most of the mutants would not survival, however, if you have a huge population of infected people, virus has more chance to produce active mutants, some of them would be more infectious, that is what happening in India at this time, therefore most important to to control the virus at the earliest stage possible, India missed the opportunity.
