@ You’re not getting the big picture. Ukraine never had operational control of the nukes. And Russia was going to take the nukes whether or not there was a memorandum. Ukraine wasn’t about to start a war over it. Yes, the U.S. helps countries, but it’s provided as much military aid as all other countries combined, and that’s not right. The US has many global obligations, and it can’t be everywhere for everyone. Our European allies need to be doing a lot more. The US is helping Israel, Taiwan, South Korea, the Philippines, etc. it’s keeping the sea lanes open in the Red Sea, Strait of Hormuz, South China Sea, etc. I agree that the United States should help, but our European allies haven’t done nearly enough.

@HistoryonYouTube The US and UK didn’t provide any guarantees. The memorandum itself only requires them to seek Security Council assistance to help Ukraine. It doesn’t even specify the kind of assistance to be provided. Ukraine also didn’t have operational control of the nukes, and it didn’t even want them. They didn’t have the money or resources to maintain them, and in exchange for releasing them Russia excused a large amount of Ukrainian debt. The nukes only had 12 year old useful lives, 8 of which had already passed. Furthermore, Russia would have taken them whether there was a memorandum in place or not. There’s no way that Ukraine was about to go to war with Russia to keep something it didn’t want. In addition , there’s also no way to know if the tanks, armored vehicles, etc., will be needed for another conflict in the future. The US doesn’t want to be in a position where it doesn’t have enough equipment to fight multiple wars at the same time. I find it amazing how other countries can feel so at liberty to expect the U.S. to just give its equipment away. If Ukraine was a NATO member, it would be a different story, but it’s not. This war is in Europe’s own backyard. The European countries should be spending a lot more and to stop expecting the US to provide protection.
