Putin is falling into exactly what Washington wants, to use up its manpower and equipment so that its less of a power in the future. Russia’s already lost. Even if the war stopped today, Russia’s power, economy, influence, etc., have all diminished. In return it holds territory that was for the most part already under Russian separatists control prior to the conflict. The west has gained because NATO has expanded, its military has increased their budgets across the board, its border with Russia has more than doubled, all while not losing a single soldier. Russia’s best move right now would be to simply stop the war to preserve whatever it has left. Otherwise its male population will continue to decline; its military will get weaker; it will have less and less world influential power; its economy will continue to suffer; and its respect will continue to decline as each day passes with the huge losses its suffering. In the meantime, NATO grows stronger and without the loss of any manpower, and with just a small contribution of equipment provided to Ukraine.
