Professor Gerdes, A while back you did an experiment where you asked us to give you a thumbs up, and you were going to evaluate the results to your usual video responses. Just curious what came out of those results?

 @APW-ry2ok I think I have seen them all, but I could have missed a particular segment of one. Do you know what video in particular that he gave the results?

 @heathermccall8015 Thanks. I’ll rewatch them.

Who ever said that it’s solely the US’s responsibility in the first place? The US has no obligation to help Ukraine, and if Trump is elected Ukraine better be more thankful for the support instead of biting the hand that feeds it.

 @heathermccall8015 No it didn’t. Read the Budapest Memorandum. It says nothing about protecting Ukraine or even providing military aid to it. It would not make sense, either. When the document was signed the United States and Ukraine weren’t even allies.

 @TechSucht It’s not a US responsibility. There’s no legal obligation. European countries should be contributing more as they’re more directly threatened. When it comes to military aid, no other country comes close to the amount that the United States provides. I hope Europe is ready to step up more in the event Trump is elected.

 @heathermccall8015 Nowhere does it state that the US must protect Ukraine or even provide aid. Those kinds of conditions would be explicitly stated. The security assurances are that the US, UK and Russia would respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial borders. Russia’s the only party to the memorandum that has not complied with its terms.

 @heathermccall8015 Again, the only security assurance spelled out is that each party would respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and its borders. Back when the memorandum was signed Ukraine and Russia were still closely aligned. The Ukrainian people had very positive views of Russia. There’s no way that the US would agree to protect it. In fact, the US doesn’t even provide that kind of assurance to Taiwan. The US can help if it wants to, it’s not obligated to do so.

 @heathermccall8015 Read “What the Budapest Memorandum means for the US on Ukraine” by the Washington Post: But unlike Article 5 of the NATO charter, it does not require a specific response from the United States or others. The reality is much murkier. The agreement is not an official treaty. It is neither legally binding nor does it carry an enforcement mechanism. And while it provides security assurances, they do not include specific promises with regard to a potential invasion.
