If the US truly is providing 70% of the military aid to Ukraine, that’s way too much. I support helping Ukraine, but this war is a direct threat to European countries, and they need to do more to provide for their own security. European countries are some of the wealthiest in the world. They shouldn’t automatically be counting on the US to protect them.

@stacey37m Very true. That’s where the problem lies. The US for years has been telling European countries that they need to contribute more to their national defense. Now that a crisis has surfaced they’re not ready for it. Right now Trump’s has a small lead in the polls, and there’s a good chance that US aid will be significantly reduced if he wins. I hope that doesn’t happen, but Europe needs to make some changes now while it can to increase its military capability and capacity to assist Ukraine before next year comes around.

@ieledorp5141 Read the Budapest Memorandum. It doesn’t say anything about protecting Ukraine.

@stacey37m I don’t know much about European politics, but it seems like Nigel saw what was coming. It’s too bad that people didn’t listen to him.

@ieledorp5141 As an American, when I read comments like yours it makes me want to say deal with the situation on your own. It’s obvious you haven’t even read the Budapest Memorandum. Think about it logically, do you really think that the US would agree to protect, defend or even provide arms to Ukraine at the time when the memorandum was signed? We weren’t even allies, and much of the Ukrainian people still supported Russia.

@stacey37m The memorandum says nothing about the U.S. providing arms, protecting or defending Ukraine. The security assurances provided are that each country will respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial borders. Russia’s the only country that hasn’t abided by its terms.

@stacey37m It’s a very short document. You should read it. And the provisions required are just a clause that takes up around half a page. The US definitely wouldn’t sign a document at that time requiring the US to provide aid to Ukraine when we weren’t even allies.

@ieledorp5141 Let me guess, you think 2% is too much? It’s Europe’s duty to protect itself and not depend on the US to do it for it. I can kind of understand why Trump feels the way he does about European countries needing to contribute more and not rely on the US so much.
