  1. Russia is not ahead. Russia brags about being the best, but we always seem to learn that its weapons are more hype than bite. You should know by now as Russia has bragged about other weapon systems as being the world’s best, and they end up being overhyped. The T-14, S-400, and the Su-57 are all examples. The Oreshnik isn’t anything special. It’s just a modified ICBM made for intermediate range use. It’s very expensive and other more powerful weapons can be used at a much lower cost. And Russia’s hypersonic missiles aren’t truly hypersonic as defined today. While they are fast enough, they’re not maneuverable. Just to put things into perspective, the US had the GAM-87 in the 1950s that flew at Mach 10-12. And the US X-51 Waverider broke the world record for hypersonic duration of flight over a decade ago, and Russia copied its design to make the Zircon. For the US, it’s just a test vehicle to produce something more advanced. The US isn’t in any rush as Russia struggles to intercept even old 30 year old ATACMS that the USA is phasing out of service.

  2. Sure it is. Both the SM-3 and THAAD are high altitude interceptors that can intercept it before it releases its warheads. The West isn’t in any rush as Russia has struggled to intercept both subsonic and supersonic missiles. Even the 30 year old ATACMS is problem for Russia, and it’s being phased out of service. They pack a much more powerful punch, and they cost substantially less to produce.
