Interesting, thanks for sharing. Combine that with what the video says about the US having easily the ability to resolve all the food needs simply by diverting bio-fuel to food & there seems to be a very strong case to be made for countries other than India taking responsibility for this - looking at you America! How come you can always provide weapons & war, but never the tools to save lives?

problem is it's too late to plant now in the northern hemisphere & also fertiliser is hard to get. In reality though, crops like field/dent corn, that is grown primarily for biofuel, but is also suitable to make cornflour, can be used to replace wheat for those facing famine & corn can be planted now in the northern hemisphere & in reality, everyone knew this was coming at least months ago, so the out of time to plant this season argument really doesn't hold! The lack of fertiliser argument does though. Australia's actually the one that should be able to significantly increase grain production for export, traditionally using very low fertiliser levels for lowish yields per hectare, but high total yields due to the amount of land used & coming off good rains in hte east, there's a lot of potential for high harvests this year, especially if the flooding from a few months ago combined with the cold this winter manages to fully wipe out the mouse plague. If the mice aren't wiped out, then Australia's eastern wheat production is again, but Australia really is the country that has the highest potential to fill the gaps right now, due to extreme experience with growing these crops with next to no fertiliser. West of Australia is still in drought though & that is a major wheat production region for export, so it won't increase

The ships they're trying to replace carry 200,000 TONNES of wheat per ship! The biggest ever aircraft carried 280 tonnes. If using existing aircraft to cut down on conversion time, water bombing aircraft would be the way to go, the biggest of these being the 737's that hold 25 tonnes of water - slightly more than a semi-trailer, that holds 20 tonnes

How about fertiliser? There's no sanctions on fertiliser exports from Russia, so why is Russia refusing to export it? Russia IS the biggest producer of fertiliser & it's refusal to export that is hurting food production globally really badly! India isn't importing wheat from Russia, why would it? Cut with the propaganda lies! Grain "under Kiev's control" is being blown up by Russia! That's why it's not reaching it's destinations!

@mintheman7 oh please!!!!!! There are 2 types of corn, sweet corn that is eaten in cob & traditional western "corn" form & maize/flour/dent corn that is used for everything else. Aztec cultures primarily grew AND ATE the corns that you are now attempting to claim are not used for food! Sweet corn was a novelty for centuries of corn use as a primary crop! Everything from popcorn to cornflakes to cornflour comes from the type of corn used for bio-fuel & that is also the corn that is desired in the developing world, for use in corn breads. They want the high starch, not the high sugar of sweet corn!

@Jason Walter I really don't care what you would call it, given your answers to date in this thread! How many gallons of fat based bio-fuels are produced in the US each year compared to corn & other plant based bio-fuel gallons produced huh? Let me give you a hint, one is in the billions of gallons, the other is not! I wonder which one is the primary fuel stock........

@isabutchers5591 why don't you enlighten us on why you can't eat corn grown for biofuel? Again, as I detailed in a previous comment, the corn used in bio-fuel is the same type that is in demand as a wheat/starch replacement grain. Sweet corn is used for eating as fresh corn, but field/dent/flour/biofuel corn or whatever you want to call it is what is needed for all uses other than fresh corn eating, whether that's corn chips, corn flour, tortillas, corn bread, corn flakes, corn syrup (which is wasteful to produce), corn oil (also wasteful) popcorn or ANY corn uses other than fresh eating or biofuel, all use the same corn! Prove to me otherwise or admit you have been conned by biofuel propaganda!

Hans Otto Kroeger Kaethler yup and additionally, instead of growing desert grasses in the desert & raising healthy grass fed beef on them, dig super deep wells & drain all the water from under the desert to grow water intensive alfalfa in the desert & then build giant feedlots in the desert to house cattle in, fed on that alfalfa & then wonder why tens of thousands of cattle die when the air con goes down & so many cows are crammed together in sheds in super hot deserts & unable to get cool because of the extreme body heat of other cattle surrounding them as well as the desert! And what was super productive ranchland, again producing cattle on natural grasses of the "buffalo plains" where herds of millions of bison have lived for eons, remove all those cattle to the feedlots, to feed on super water intensive crops & replace the ranches with super water intensive almonds to get the almond milk that is somehow meant to be better than cows milk? (and kinda is in water use when all the round about ways the milk's produced through water intensive feed crops are considered) oh & also import 50% of the country's bees to those almond crops each year for pollination, right after spraying the trees with bee toxins & then wonder why all the bees are dying off too!

A semi-trailer carries 20 tonnes of wheat. A cargo ship carries 200,000 tonnes of wheat, so even if you forget the drones & get the semi-trailers directly to the ports, you still need 20,000 trucks to carry as much grain as a single ship is carrying & it's fuel needs to transport it are FAR higher than the ship has!

@talleywa5772 you know whenever any of you alternate reality fools says crap like that, it instantly gives away who you are & that you should be ignored! Australia had an election in May btw & completely replaced the federal government, putting the other side into power, but only just, giving them the lowest vote in their history & putting 16 independents into the lower house to replace all the party faithful of the previous government instead of just handing power to the other party. Independents in the Australian parliament have a history of looking out for small farmers, manipulating the government to obtain a proper investigation into the misuse of water allocations to mines & big ag. Not that the previous government was doing anything wrong for farmers anyway, throughout covid, the government went out of their way to ensure Aussie farmers were looked after didn't they

A few comments on this, but more needed & good to educate the western people (like myself) being fed US propaganda. Can you explain more on Iran though? I would have thought they'd buy it for their own people, given their starvation issues, are you saying they buy to onsell for profit too?

@aerita7608 ah ok :) Given the way Iran have been known to starve their own people, I honestly thought they probably were doing something with exporting for government profit while their people starved or something, but UAE onselling makes more sense, thanks for clarifying/correcting :)

um no, just not reliant on Russia/Ukraine in the same way Europe is. Some Asian countries are self reliant, some have planned in advance & stockpiled, but will still be impacted within a year or 2 if this isn't resolved & most that eat wheat get it from Australia rather than Ukraine, so haven't been impacted, but doesn't mean they're "self reliant". Don't get cocky, it could come back to bite you!

not an easy solution! Easy solution is to switch to new forms of bio-fuel making that don't need grains & then divert the grains to human consumption & right now I would actually also add diverting chicken feed into human consumption channels, given the issues with chicken pandemic deaths. In terms of cows though, they take too long to breed, so it's counter productive to mess with their feed systems, as there's nothing that can be done quickly in changes. Cattle eat primarily grass & human inedible around the world, only America feeds them any significant levels of human edibles & even then, it's way less than they're feeding to their cars. Chickens are fed primarily the waste from biofuel production from soybeans, with only 18% of the soybean becoming oil & the other 82% of the soybean becoming waste, which is then processed to make it edible for chickens & fed to them to dispose of. That processing does actually make it edible to humans too though, so oil free soymeal flour is an option to feed people instead of chickens right now

68 billion of those land animals you speak of are chickens, that will each eat 1.6kgs of low calorie, low nutrition oilseed cake waste, to produce 1kg of chicken meat, so that's not very helpful is it! The only wheat that goes to livestock is the wheat that has insects or mouse bodies or faeces in & consequently fails human consumption standards. Instead of being burnt, it is fed to livestock

& btw, one of the biggest limits to food production right now is a fertiliser shortage, so if you burn all the waste instead of feeding it to animals & using their manure to fertiliser crops, guess what happens to crop production levels?

@Theoryofcatsndogs I'm sure the bio-fuel crops taste MUCH better than eating nothing but air! That argument you are making is the same one that was made in America for not supplying industrial toiletpaper to supermarkets, claiming consumers wouldn't buy it, yet other countries had no problems in diverting industrial rolls to supermarkets during the panic buying period & guess what? People were more than happy to buy that over using their hands!

@Jason Walter please don't question where others studied science with the nonsense you are claiming in every comment you make! Grains DO become bio-fuel, why you think it's only animal fats that do is beyond me & there are PLENTY of people that we know for a fact, due to the pandemic, are more than capable of working from home, so huge amounts of fuel can be saved by legislation encouraging this where possible before we even look for additional savings! As for you, IF you need to go to work, not work from home, then I suspect you would be more than capable of using a bus, car pooling or considering a switch to a more efficient vehicle like a bike if you refuse to share your fuel costs & trip with others

@Jason Walter I'm not even talking about ethanol v bio diesel though am I! Where did I use those terms? You speak of "animal fats", so lets here the numbers on how many gallons of bio-fuel are produced from animal fats in the US each year! Not only is ethanol produced in MUCH higher volumes than bio-diesel, but bio-diesel is primarily produced from plant based oils too! Now sure, that's soybeans, not corn, but soybeans are grown in rotation with corn, so if soybeans are in the ground growing vegetable oil for bio-fuel (and 99% of all soybeans grown in the US are used for bio-fuel, NOT eating), then that means those fields are NOT growing corn for food while doing so! Wheat is grown in different conditions, so doesn't compete with corn & soy for their growing space so I'm not going to include that in the discussion. Wheat competes for growing space with barley, that is used for beer & bio-fuel & the US has recently dropped it's wheat production so as to increase barley production to sell to China for beer production

@chrismitchell9338 yes there's a difference & for addressing calorie needs in the developing world, it's what you call "feed corn" that is desired, not sweet corn. The animal feed is a factor to consider, as that does still lead to high value food & corn being 200 times more water efficient than wheat in high temperature growing needs to be considered as well, but in reality, the technology is now available that biofuels can be made from the corn stalks & bio-matter & the corn kernels diverted to human food to address the current food issues globally. The soymeal waste from bio-fuel production from soybean oil can also easily be diverted from chicken food to human food right now, especially given the chicken pandemic issues & culling of chickens, leading to excess chicken food being available & being fully edible to humans. Might not meet US food consumption standards, but it CAN be put through high enough quality control checks to ensure it is edible for humans & then fed to those that are going to be facing famine & starvation without it

@isabutchers5591 That's not at all true that it's 99.9% of people who would choose to grab a bag of money rather than a drowning person from floodwaters, it's the opposite & only somewhere between 1% & 0.1% of people would think that way. Unfortunately they are the same people in control of crop production & where the food goes in countries like America so unfortunately they are choosing to starve humans, so as to make money to pay for their little space tourism adventures - can't see human suffering from space or their penthouse apartments

who blew up the silos & burnt the farm equipment needed to harvest & get to the silos? Of course they mined to stop the Russians being able to blow up more silos & massive amounts of wheat sitting at the ports! At least that way the wheat is still sitting there & hopefully will be able to be distributed at some point! If Russia has it's way, that grain will be blown up & lost completely!

@charlie15627 Just to simplify what you said there with your long rant, Putin has chosen to try to reduce global grain yields in revenge for sanctions put onto him & his country for his illegal invasion of Ukraine & his anger that people are actually standing up to his bullying & you are defending Putin in taking these actions in refusing to supply the fertiliser other countries were relying on - and paying Russia for, to grow grain to feed the world. Russia IS directly responsible for the global grain shortages via preventing grain leaving Ukraine & blowing up supplies & farm equipment there, along with refusing to export the fertiliser needed to grow crops elsewhere. I guess an argument can be made that other countries should never have allowed themselves to be dependent on a psychopath for fertiliser supplies & so are responsible for the grain shortages because they did this & you can certainly be sure that this IS being corrected going forward and will not be repeated! Russia has damaged itself VERY badly with it's illegal, unprovoked war & associated war crimes & possibly crimes against humanity, although a court is still to rule if he has reached that level!

@charlie15627 ONE ship carries 200,000 tonnes of grain, one train carriage/shipping container carries 20 tonnes so yeh, how about you stop being so ridiculous in ur lies huh? You're trying to claim that 100 million tonnes of grain have left Ukraine via trains, that would carry only 200 tonnes each, if 10 carriages filled to capacity? That's 1 million trains that would have had to travel to the ports, load up, then travel the whole way back across Ukraine again with their load! Spread over 100 days, that would mean 10,000 trains a day! 416 trains an hour, or 7 trains per minute! Standard operating protocols for trains in the world's best systems is a 3 minute gap between every train for safety, so your numbers are 21 times beyond what's possible, allowing there's the staff to run the trains 24/7, for a longer period than has been available, with no time given to load or unload. Why don't you go join your army instead of working in the troll farm, cause you're really not very good at this propaganda thing are you! It's physically impossible for even the best rail systems in the world, with unlimited resources to have exported everything that was supposed to go by ship by train! & trains in Ukraine have been used to transport civilians to safety, NOT for endless cargo! Bad enough the work they have to put into constant repairs of the railway lines from the bombings, so as to get civilians out, without also needing to worry about grain trains being blown up!

That is preventable, no reason we can't plant elsewhere now (other than the fertiliser shortages anyway) but you're right, this isn't going away, the problem won't be fixed, it will be worse next year!

to suddenly, massively increase production of? no! Corn is the best available option, since there's HUGE amounts of it currently growing for bio-fuel & stuff like high fructose corn syrup that has massive amounts of corn wasted in the process of making just unhealthy sugar. Biofuel corn and soy/soymeal could easily be diverted from currently growing stock
