There has been a strong russian influence on Ukraine since their independence in 1991. And it had increased considerably under putlers rule, but in 2014 Ukraine finally had enough. They threw off the Russian yoke and wanted democracy and prosperity, free from Russian influence, corruption and abuse of power.
