In English it is called Kyiv. After their founders, the three brothers Kyi, Shchek, and Khoryv in the 5th century. They were described as "Polans". After their deaths the "Drevlians" (todays Belarus and Ukraine) ruled the city. They were later conquered by the Khazars (Turkish). Later it was controlled by the Varangians (Swedish Vikings, Finns, Norse and east slavic people) who founded the state Kievan Rus and made Kyiv their capital in the 8th century. The Mongols conquered Ukraine/Kyiv in the 13 century. The Grand Duchy of Moscovia/Muscovy, a vassal state of the Mongols, was later put to rule over Kievan Rus (todays Ukraine, Belarus and Western russia.

@RoboticPope Kyiv is derived from the Ukrainian spelling and thereby the correct one. It has nothing to do with "West media", but promoted by the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

@RoboticPope Yes! Kyiv is derived from the Ukrainian spelling (and founder Kyi) and thereby the correct one. It has nothing to do with "West media", but promoted by the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They understandably want to strengthen their own language and not to the country that atatcked them.
