  1. It isn't succeeding that breeds hate. Being different in a negative way, being tall or being blond or being light skinned can be different but it is positively received. Being an immigrant is being different, coming from a small town to a large urban center is being different. In those cases being different is negative and discriminated against. Gypsies are not successful, and they ended up exterminated in WW2, and they are fairly universally hated. You just have to be different from the norm.
