Yes, it's a depressing picture. Ever since the post WW2 period, at least in Australia, the traditional family is gone, Dad working in his job for 40years, Mum at home looking after the children and aged relatives, helping others in the community. It's all gone. You have to spend years at school, higher education just to be able to get a shitty job. You're in your late 20s before you can think of marrying and maybe affording a deposit on a house and a bank mortgage. It goes on and on. Children are staying at home because they can't leave home, often have trouble getting work.
I am not saying that before the WW2 changes things were utopian, but people managed on one income that supported a family, and paid the mortgage.
