  1. I don't know they were underrated. The Phoenicians carried their city state mentality everywhere they settled, and that was their undoing. The Romans once vassals to Etruscan kings went off and conquered other towns and regions including the Etruscan territory and Romanize them. The Phoenicians even the Carthaginians did not do that, so they were left on their own when mightier states overthrew them.

  2. It is only important because we are so dependant on the written word, and the Phoenicians adapted and modified existing scripts, they cannot be proven to have invented the alphabet.
