@fromage4204 Yup, at the end of the day start/stop tech does absolutely NO good to an engine’s internals.
1
I'd just like to add that it was a pre-facelift model. I heard that they softened the LCI model of the E90.
1
@Mr330d Eh, it’s easily avoidable and fixable if caught in time.
1
That’s a really cool car. They drive so well!!
1
Awesome car. What is it I hear about suspension issues on this car? Is it a serious problem? It sounds so awesome! I'd take it over the current RS4 any day.
1
@Metrooo4 It won’t. Make sure it had regular oil changes. That’s the most important part.
1
Loved this video! Was looking forward to watching this all day :) Edit: I would build a first gen VW Touareg or an early 2000s Land Cruiser for off-roading.

I’m a big 90s/early 2000s BMW guy, but I love the W211 E320 cdi with the OM648. That engine is legendary, and it’s such a nice car to drive.
1
@abdbach379 I had no idea N57 engines were so bad. I’ve only heard pretty good things about their diesel engines. What a s***show.
1
Last regular 3 series with a manual :/ (At least in the US)

Great points made! I couldn’t believe this story when I first heard it. Especially in the current situation that we’re in. It’s just ridiculous.

Any chance of doing a meet up in Michigan? It’d be fun to meet you and thetopher!

Except for the horrible reliability of the early N63/S63 engines. Also, the weak rear end of the F10 M5. If you can find a 6 speed E60 M5, you have to do rod bearings, vanos pump, and maybe throttle actuators. The F10 M5 has countless extra issues over the S85. Let's put it this way: if you can find a 6 speed E60 M5 that's had the rod bearings done and vanos pump done for around 25-30k, you should have an extra 5-10k for issues that could arise. If you can find an F10 M5 in that price range, you need to have at minimum 15-20k liquid for issues that could arise. Not just my take, but ask any BMW mechanic and they'll tell you the same thing. Plus, the F10 is much heavier and isolated (not in a good way) compared to the E60, while not being significantly more roomy.

Really enjoy watching these travel vlogs! What a cool time to visit Az with that snow!!

I have a soft spot for these cars (this generation). So fun to drive. But, I’d be concerned buying them used because most of them have been crashed or tuned.
1
I smiled at that part where you mentioned the Porsche logos on this car. Usually it’s the other way around, with the Macan and Cayenne having a bunch of Audi logos all over.

Just watched the entire video. You said people compare current non-M cars to previous generation M cars. I never do that. I always compare my non-sport package F30 328i manual to the previous gen E90 328i without the sport package. When you compare them, so much of the precision and steering feel was lost. Not to mention the naturally aspirated inline 6. Anyway, I liked the video!

Great analysis. I unfortunately am guilty sometimes of using my phone. Just to change music. But, I notice that when I'm driving stick I'm so much more in tune with what's going on. That's why I love driving stick. It's extremely hard to be on your phone when you're in rush hour and you have to constantly be changing gears!

Awesome video!! Love the front-end on this thing. Gives me Reventon vibes.
1
What a nice surprise!! I love this car too!

Something I noticed with the press launch too a few months ago, but I thought maybe it was due to the altitude. Strange how labored they seem to be given the amount of power they have.

Awesome shots! I really like this car. Happy Holidays Tom!

Awesome video! Thanks for talking about the steering. I’m so picky when it comes to steering feel. It’s enough of a factor for me to stick with these older cars for the steering feel alone. I’ve heard from quite a few people that the recirculating ball steering on the W124 is sublime, much better than the steering used on the E39 540i/M5. I can confirm the steering on the V8 E39s is nowhere near as good as the steering on I6 variants, especially the 540i steering as the ratio on the M5 is a little sharper.

Love the different style of video. The music selection was fantastic! Also, the aerial shots were great :)

Hi Tedward, quick question. Would you be comfortable daily driving an E39 530i 40 miles round trip every day? I've got a 2011 Ford Fusion, but I have an affinity for the E39. I'm just worried that it would leave me stranded when I'd need to make it to school. I would have a second car, but I'd rely mainly on the E39. Have you driven a sports package 530i? I recently did, and I was amazed by its handling and refinement. I recently subscribed to your channel, and I like the easygoing content! Cheers!

Hi Ted, I've been watching your videos for a while and I find them interesting. I'm a mechanical engineering sophomore, and I was wondering if you could give any career advice? I went for this field because I always knew I was into cars. Could you make a video or let your viewers know about your college experience? What would you recommend to be successful in the engineering field? Thanks!

You're not wrong :))

Awesome video Tom!! This is such a great car :)
1
Almost at 100k subs!! Awesome video!
1
@RCXDerp Anything that’s been really optimized for a DCT. For example, a current gen GTR. Or an F10/G30 M5.
1
I love how much attention this video’s getting!!
1
Franz Fanon Speaking from personal experience as that double pull mechanism broke on my last car :/
1
Such a cool car!! I also think you made the right choice vs. an E46 M3. The difference in interior quality and overall solidity between an E46 and an E39 is very significant. It’s not like the E90 vs. E60, where the E90 was very close. Edit: One thing that seems to strand people in E39s and E46s is the fuel pump. People never replace the fuel filter and it seems like at this age it’s something that goes bad.
1
Yup. They made some significant changes for 04. You want to avoid 02/03 model years.
1
@BoostedAkatsukiRiffs I get what you’re saying. My logic is that if I wanted a coupe, I’d get an M2. There’s no point in having such a large coupe (the M4) when a vehicle of the same size (the M3) is more practical as a 4 door, and I think looks better.
1
Congrats Tom!! I was super super close to getting the previous gen 10th gen Si. I’m a big fan of these. Excited for videos on this thing!
1
I applaud you for doing this. I see so many people that are stuck at a job that brings so many frustrations on a daily basis, even though the pay is good. It definitely takes some courage to leave something stable. But I can say that lots of people appreciate what you and the Windingroad mag does, so there will be plenty of opportunities!!! :)
1
@Cyrix2k Yup, F10 M5 does still have hydraulic steering. But is it like the steering in E60/E90 where you know what’s going on, or is road feel only present when you’re REALLY pushing the car?
