Such a guarantee is standard, and is done to prevent external parties (such as the russian orcs in this case) from being able to affect the NATO application process. At the onset of that guarantee, if russia attacks Ukraine, then the US will - via conventional arms - remove russia's ability to conduct such attacks. What will the russian orcs do about it? By the time Ukraine wins this war, retakes Crimea and boots the orcs out of the rest of its land, the russian orc horde will be spent, and their economy will be limping along. At that point, the russian federation will struggling to keep itself from dissolving. Should it manage this, it will be in no position to pick a fight with the US - it simply will not be worth it at that point. The only ones "holding a dagger to moscows throat" are the russian orcs - destroying their own country (see the two civil wars). russian could well oppose Ukraine joining NATO, but stop attacking Ukraine due to a security guarantee from the US. Why would they do so? Because the US (if stipulated in the security guarantee) would destroy any russian assets used to attack Ukraine. I would expect this is the whole point of that proposed security guarantee from the US. It is assumed that russia - like a spoiled brat - will try everything it can to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO. The security guarantee would deal with 'spoiled brat outburts' from russia - should they happen - by removing (through conventional arms) russia's ability to make such outbursts. What will the russian orcs do about it? You russians seem to think somehow you have a right to dictate the affairs of other nations. You are learning in Ukraine now that this is not true.
