  2. PETA is a really bad analogy as it is specific organization and not an -ism. It would be like refusing to call yourself conservative because you don't want to be associated with Ku Klux Klan, or refusing to call yourself a baptist because you don't approve of the actions of Westboro Baptist Church.

  3. You're confused. Humanism is the idea that human beings are capable of and should be free to form their own morality as opposed to having it dictated by religion. It can only vaguely be associated with equality, assuming that is where evidence and reason leads us. Yes, some misandrists falsely ride under the flag of feminism, but by redefining the term after them, you make the real feminists a great disservice. What you should do instead is letting them know they're not feminists.

  4. May I suggest that perhaps you encounter mostly extremist feminists because they are extreme and not because they make up the majority. The more laid back and balanced feminists are not as keen to make you aware of their opinions, and those who do so may not be controversial enough for you to identify them as feminists.
