The fundamental idea is that manual labor is being replaced by technology, which eventually makes the majority of world population redundant, and this is why the "technocrats" are supposedly conspiring to wipe them out. You argue that these people are still needed since the technocrats wealth is relying on their consumption, but I guess they could get around that simply by consuming more themselves. No. I don't buy Alex theories, but I find them interesting in a sci-fi kind of way.
