I like the cynical Aussie. He offers a more sociological perspective on things.

I live in Sweden, he's welcome.

william weir You really don't know what you're talking about.

william weir Sweden is doing fine. Actually, we're doing better than most of Europe. YouTube is not a reliable source for information. Our immigration policy (on asylum seekers) is as philanthropic as it is strategic.

william weir The way you simplify and exaggerate, it is clear that you have a very limited and one-sided view on the issue.

william weir We were talking about Sweden, not Australia. I'm not familiar with the issues you address, but I'm sure such violations would reach the newspapers, so please provide links. Then we can have a discussion.

william weir Right, so when I google that I find a number of separate issues (this is why I asked you to provide a link). In all cases it was a matter of removing judeo-christian symbolism or traditions from public services. This is a step towards a more secular society, away from theocratic ideas that shouldn't have been there in the first place. You are still perfectly free to celebrate christmas privately. And the halal food in your son's school... link?

william weir Allright, assuming the school lunch issue is correct as you explain it, I agree. A publicly funded school should not forbid students from bringing non-halal lunch. A more reasonable solution would be to stop swapping lunches (why is this happening in the first place?). However, my guess is that the Victorian education board will come to the same conclusion as you and I and reverse this policy, and I would advice you not to extrapolate from this kind of local isolated events to predict the downfall of a nation on the opposite side of the globe. Also, is halal really that bad? I've seen propaganda with graphic imagery and video arguing that halal cause more pain/distress to the animal than the bolt stunners used in western meat industry, but I've read scientific studies suggesting it's actually the other way around. The reason west embraced bolt stunners is probably more related to efficiency than ethics.
