It's probably much less of an effort to figure out that the DNA contain an XX chromosome than it is to compare the base pairs 1 by 1 to see if they are identical? It might also be an equipment issue. DNA sequencing devices have improved by several orders of magnitude in recent years. If such device was not available in the Trayvon Martin case this explains why it took so much longer.
