There seem to be a common misconception in this commentsection that the Neanderthals are our ancestors. The fact is, homo sapiens and homo neanderthalis have a common ancestor, and evolved in parallell on different continents (africa & eurasia). The Neanderthals contributed to 1-4% of our DNA through interbreeding as we left Africa, and that's about it.

Actually he's kindof right. Neanderthals are generally said to have a common ancestor with us. They are not our ancestors. However, in a 2010 study it was found that they contributed to 1-4% of our DNA through interbreeding as the early homo sapiens started to emigrate Africa.

I assumed that a two year old report would still apply. Sometimes I forget that science is a continuous process hehe. Thanks for the info.

According to a 2010 study the Neanderthals contributed 1–4% of our DNA through interbreeding with early humans. But yeah, I wouldn't consider the neanderthals our ancestors. We've just got an ancestor in common.
