  1. But I agree with you that if he is an Atheist, he should make this position clear. He have a several other controversial positions that he defends regularily. Why not make atheism one of them? Maybe he feels that the religious topic is a diversion from his general agenda, making him hesitant to allocate time and resources to defending the position. After all it's not a positive claim, so it doesn't really imply any political positions.

  2. It's pretty common in the US that people are atheists without knowing or admitting it. The phenomenon is similar to other loaded words eg. socialist. The words carry a lot of baggage that people rather avoid out of convenience. If he says he's an atheist, many people unconciously assume he's an anti-theist. Also, eventhough he's openly rediculed the abrahamic religions as fairytales, he can still belive in a less institutionalized belief system like deism or pantheism.

  3. I think people became confused about Obama's religion the moment he started acknowledging muslims, jews and non-belivers as Americans. In American terms, this is not a very christian thing to do.
