Whether we're talking about terrorism or criminality, the core issue is the safety of the american people. The problem with you right-wing nuts is that instead of doing the rational thing: maximizing safety at minimum human suffering, you're satisfied with knowing that the perpetrator is suffering as a form of vengeance or retribution for their crime, eventhough statistics have proven your method ineffective and in some aspects even counter-productive.

I'm sorry that I can't live up to your conception of me. I was never against solitary confinement. All my comments was about the benefits of crime rehabilitation and the flaws of your attitude and the current system. I think solitary confinement can be a useful tool, both to discourage bad behaviour and to keep people off the yard if necessary. There's no reason to keep them in there for years though. As many have confirmed here, a few weeks is hell enough to be discouraging.

It's not about compassion, it's about effectively keeping people safe. I thaught I made that clear? What bothers me about your attitude is that the efficiency of crime rehabilitation is proven, but people like you are so repulsed by the idea of applying care and nurture to criminals that you rather keep the traditional ineffective/counterproductive methods. You rather keep on treating them like dogs and point at them in disgust when they behave accordingly.

No, I didn't say that. I'm saying Pelican Bay make them worse. And it doesn't matter how anxious you and I are in their presence. It's not an excuse to lock them up for life, nor to treat them like shit while they're serving their sentence.

You asked me what I would do, and I answered. I never said it was easy; that was your interpretation.

I take that as a concede.

You're not very bright are you. I hope you end up in jail.

You just proved my point. Instead of solving the problem you dehumanize and find pleasure in their suffering. You are a weak human being driven by emotional impulses; afraid to acknowledge that you are much alike the people you like to call cockroaches. It's only through analysis and understanding of their actions and what triggers them that we can prevent them.

I would extend his sentence and throw him into solitary confinement for say two weeks (he's obviously not ready for society). Then I'd do an analysis of the event: What allowed it to happen (weapons in circulation? lack of surveillence? deficient rehabilitation program?) How do we prevent its recurrence? And then I'd implement the changes accordingly.
