  1. Here's my take on what's happening: Tech companies tried their best to enter the huge markets emerging in the east, especially China. In the process they compromised on their principles and developed tools for surveillance and control of information and speech demanded by gate keepers of said markets. They were in part successful and realized that they could offer the same tools to democratic governments in the west, in return for favorable treatment. So what we're seeing now is western governments in collaboration with tech companies playing around with a toolbox developed for dictatorships. I think many Western leaders look to China with a mix of jealousy and admiration, because they can plan for decades, execute plans without respect for individual rights, and GDP growth is king.

  2. Remember Zuckerberg testifying in Congress and Senate with lots of tough questions regarding the responsibility of Facebook in society and its relation to government. Given the media attention it got, my gut told me it was something like a pressure campaign meant to force Facebook to share its powerful tools with government. Seems like my gut was right.
