  1. Is this a surprise? In 1996 and 1998 Osama bin Laden released fatwas in which he argued that US presence in the Arabian Peninsula was a threat to the Islamic holy cities of Mecca and Medina. These documents were referred to as sources of motivation for the 1998 US embassy bombing and the later 2001 September 11 attacks on World Trade Center. US presence hardly decreased since then, considering the subsequent launch of the "war on terror" which is still ongoing.
