  1. As a teenager I remember I stayed up late, partly because of the sweet solitude after the rest of the family were sleeping. I really appreciated that little extra time for myself and my teenage angst. As long as my parents wouldn't start work equally late in the morning, I don't think I would stay up much later if school started later.

I've heard the notion "symmetry is beauty" regurgitated with conviction so many times, and every time I cringe because it appears to be too simple of a model for beauty. On the one hand it helps the poor, and on the other hand hands over the responsibility of how taxes are best spent to individuals and eliminates a lot of beurocracy since it may substitute most other government programs, allowing private business to provide the services.

  20. Anyone who has attempted multivariable optimization is familiar with the problem of local optima. From the vantage point of a local optimum, all directions seem to make the situation worse. Yet, what you have found is rarely the global optimum as there are typically many such locations in the variable space and it is not obvious you are in the most optimal of them. To find out you must dare to leave the local optimum and explore what appear to be less optimal territories.

  26. +MexicanBurrito Let's not pretend it's either one or the other. We are both shaped by our social environment to a large extent but we are also reasoning individuals. However naturally if we want to promote a social change we cannot wait around for individuals to spontaneously change themselves. Also, the idea that everyone has the right to love whoever they want to love is not original and I find it unlikely that you arrived at this conclusion independently but were probably influenced by other sources than the Catholic Church.

  27. It gives me hope that Kristalina mentions that inequality tends to increase with every economic crisis and that this is a problem. The reason this happens is essentially that assets tend to become very cheap during crisis, so the wealthy can go on shopping spree. Consequently, after every crisis, more of the economy ends up being owned by a smaller number of people. This effect is aggravated severely by bailouts of financial institutions. It would be nice to see Kristalina find as much "strength in action" when it comes to this problem as she finds in regard to Covid-19. Edit: I'd like to add that simple redistribution in terms of social services or financial support to the poor is not enough to solve this problem, because the economy will still belong to an ever shrinking group of people.

  33. Allright. It appears the idea of Darwin's supposed death-bed conversion is based on a single person's testimony, published after his death. His entire family disputes the validity of her testimony. Consider for example his dauther's statement: "I was present at his deathbed. Lady Hope was not present during his last illness, or any illness. I believe he never even saw her, but in any case she had no influence over him in any department of thought or belief. He never recanted any of his scientific views, either then or earlier. We think the story of his conversion was fabricated in the U.S.A. The whole story has no foundation whatever." A sick old man in agony on his deathbed is also not the most reliable source, even if he was the founder of the idea. Darwin's theory of evolution is still in good agreement with the fossil record and offers useful explanatory power that helps us deal with diseases and develop agriculture.

  50. Her conclusion is much more general than the rest of her talk. She's basically begging politicians and the public to fund curious researchers who wants to explore the unknown rather than only research where we are able to predict clear applications. The thing about research is that we don't really know where we are going, and unexpected applications often come afterwards, so it may be unwise and perhaps wasteful to only fund easily motivated research.
