  9. Increasing productivity is not unsustainable, in fact it may be necessary for sustainability. In essense, an increase in productivity is to use resources more efficicently. Less material, energy and labor is required to produce the same amount of value.

  10. Ariana The reality is that the number of children being born in the world has stabilized, and the world population is expected to level out around 11 billion. The reason is that the more developed a country is, the less children each woman give birth to, and most countries are now fairly developed. If we want to achieve sustainability without reducing our standard of living, reducing the world population (I don't even want to think about what that entails), or expand to other planets, productivity is our way to go, making this manufacturing revolution more than welcome.

  17. I think you are right. Liberals and libertarians share a lot of values. I think the difference is what they believe the spontaneous trajectory of society is if people are left to organize themselves. Libertarians tend to be optimistic, trusting that the framework of capitalism is sufficient for society to self-organize and maintain a generally desirable equilibrium state. They tend to view the capitalistic system as inherently meritocratic, i.e. the system rewards good ideas, talent and effort. Liberals tend to be more pessimistic, viewing the capitalistic system as unstable. Society is not meritocratic, but unfair. The reward goes to those who are in position to claim it and not those who deserve it. They believe that politics should be used to level the playing field, such that everyone are given the same opportunity to fulfill their potential. This description may not fit everyone, but this is how I view it at the moment.

  20. We need to take a step back and discuss values. When values are sorted out, we can talk about solutions. It is dishonest to start with a conclusion and try to connect unrelated values to it. By starting at conservative values, you will naturally arrive at a conservative conclusions and not liberal ones, and vice versa.

  34. If you look at it from a less cynical perspective, greed is one of the strongest human drives. While many systems tries to surpress this drive through discipline or threats, the idea of capitalism is to exploits it to produce good.

  35. Very interesting and emotional talk, but I'm not sure I agree. My experience is rather the opposite, that I had a very strong sense of compassion and freedom as a child. I was taught that adulthood requires me to sacrifice freedom for greater or more noble causes. Being raised by parents, school system and society at large, my expectation of freedom has regressed and my compassion has been dulled. I think she had these instincts once, but her society was very effective at teaching her otherwise, probably before her first memory. Once she got out, she had to rediscover them.

  48. It was assumed that increased connectedness would lead to more discussion and thereby convergence towards a more shared worldview. Instead people realized that it is now much easier to find people who share their opinions, so there is no need for discussion.

  49. My experience is that a lot of time and attention goes towards chasing funding and incentivized publishing targets rather than engaging curiously in research, so she has a point. There's a mentality that too much research goes into fundamentals and less so towards applications that stimulates the economy. Well, without the fundamentals, there's nothing to bring to application.

  50. theslimeylimey What you're missing is that this talk isn't solely about racial issues but about the industrialist bias of our historical narrative and the negligence of the impact their exploitation has on the local environment and health of the working class. The idea that only the activities of a few influential people of a town makes it to the historical record and the rest are at large neglected and forgotten, it scares me, and I think it is incredibly important to keep this in mind when reflecting on our past.
