An increase in productivity means that less material, energy and labor is required to produce the same value. A technological shift like this will facilitate sustainability, not hamper it.

Increasing productivity is not unsustainable, in fact it may be necessary for sustainability. In essense, an increase in productivity is to use resources more efficicently. Less material, energy and labor is required to produce the same amount of value.

Ariana The reality is that the number of children being born in the world has stabilized, and the world population is expected to level out around 11 billion. The reason is that the more developed a country is, the less children each woman give birth to, and most countries are now fairly developed. If we want to achieve sustainability without reducing our standard of living, reducing the world population (I don't even want to think about what that entails), or expand to other planets, productivity is our way to go, making this manufacturing revolution more than welcome.

Jon Wise Yes, the projection is of course extrapolation from the current trend and cannot account for any dramatic change. There is a chance that life expectancy will extend dramatically quite soon, yes, but it may also take 100 years, or more. You also need to consider that the rapid progress made on AI which may eventually unlock our key to longer life may also bring other technological innovations which have a different influence on the trend. What I'm saying is that it is probably best to act on trends suggested by solid data and not speculate.
