  1. My experience is that a lot of time and attention goes towards chasing funding and incentivized publishing targets rather than engaging curiously in research, so she has a point. There's a mentality that too much research goes into fundamentals and less so towards applications that stimulates the economy. Well, without the fundamentals, there's nothing to bring to application.
