You are right. There are definitely people who should not have kids.

@MrCrisisZ We are now 8 billion and rising. If there is such a thing as population collapse coming, I don't think it is your or my responsibility to prevent it. If you have kids, that should be because you want them, not because of some sense of duty. Besides, population can't grow forever on a finite planet.

I don't know, I see a lot of parents becoming risk averse in order to protect their children. Sometimes parents choose not to do "the right thing" out of fear that the blowback may affect their children. Sometimes parents become more selfish, besides extending the self to include the family.

@AmericanAdvancement Yes, and after that decline the population is expected to converge at a stable level, right? The models are also based on a lot of assumptions. The willingness to have children is influenced by policy, so there is room for adjustment. In the long run, compensating for low birth rate by immigration isn't sustainable, so there is a need to restructure society/economy to promote parenthood, e.g. parental leave, child support, ...

"Women and Children first" Oh, I always assumed this is because men typically have better physique and thus have better odds at surviving longer and are more effective at helping others. From that standpoint it makes sense that the more vulnerable and less capable go first into the life-boat.
